The Story > Dwight Ritcher shares his story behind this amazing song: This song came in strong and all at once...I was just a kid. I had just finished a late night set at an old club in Hyannis, Massachusetts. I was in a relationship with someone who was going through a lot of personal upheaval, someone that was burning too brightly and didn’t heed it. And it was with someone who didn’t have a good relationship with their own self. The kitchen was off the right side of the stage and I rushed there, scrambling to grab a pen from the short order cook’s station. I knew I had some time as the owners were cashing out the bar and would soon be putting those weird little cups on all the bottles of liquor. I scribbled furiously. The song that poured out that night was a prayer and a reminder of survival despite their circumstances. The crazy part? It went into a notebook and was never recorded. Fast forward twenty years. Kyle and I are sitting at my table listening to some of the new music he was making - music that contains extraordinary, perspective-shifting messages about his life (as well as the lives of many others involved in this project). I was taken by these stories.

I grabbed a guitar and sang him the first verse of that song born back in Hyannis. I didn't put any stock in the fact that so many years had passed or that I was in a different place in my own life. I didn’t waste the time. Yes, time has changed things, but the person I wrote this for was still in need of that prayer. They still needed a reminder. They still needed to be honored. I never imagined ‘Look Where You’ve Been’ would find its life on this album and would be what it is today. And I’m so grateful for that
