The Story > PRO offered this beautiful instrumental that he created based around a guitar loop by his friend Matt Murray that spoke deeply to me. I wanted to write a song discussing how we as humans deal with loss and the verses just poured out of me like tears. I had always loved the Fu-Gee-La (Refugee Camp remix) sample for the hook for a tune like this for a few reasons – 1. “Call Mister Martin” - My real name is Martin. 2. “Tell him to build a coffin” – is about the finality of the end of a life. And 3. “A hundred MC’s get murderin” – is also about death and at the same time, killing it on the mic. Also, the spoken vocal samples are from an interview with Jon Batiste who was experiencing the highest of career success after years of hard work but is also dealing with the potential reality of losing his love to disease in the near future (and the struggles within them both).A heavy song, but beautifully shared.
